Putin Holds Talks With Trump Envoys on Ukraine War

Russian President Vladimir Putin held more than three hours of talks with US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow on Saturday as Washington continued efforts to find a way to end the war in Ukraine.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the meeting was useful and that the two US envoys presented several ideas on possible ways to reach a settlement. He did not provide details of the proposals.

Ushakov said Putin told the American delegation that Russia was making progress on the battlefield and remained confident about achieving its objectives. The Russian president also stressed the need to address what Moscow considers the underlying causes of the conflict.

The talks come as Russia and Ukraine continue long-range missile and drone attacks, while the positions along much of the front line have remained largely unchanged.

A White House official described the discussions as substantive and said Washington would announce further steps in the coming weeks.

Witkoff and Kushner travelled to Moscow on behalf of US President Donald Trump. They left Russia after the meeting and were expected to travel to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.

Ushakov said the discussions also covered economic issues and possible projects involving Russia and the United States. Russian presidential investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who attended the meeting, described the visit as an important step toward peace.

Putin also praised Trump’s efforts to bring the war to an end. Trump said on Friday that Washington had a new proposal aimed at ending the conflict but did not disclose its details.

Despite the renewed diplomatic activity, Moscow and Kyiv remain divided over the terms of a possible settlement.

Russia continues to demand control over Ukrainian territory it claims, while Ukraine has rejected giving up land it currently holds. The Kremlin has also maintained its demand that Ukraine abandon its NATO membership ambitions.

The latest meeting therefore marks another diplomatic effort by Washington, but no agreement or major breakthrough was announced after the talks.
