PM Shehbaz Sharif has directed the installation of facility desks at petrol pumps for registering under the government’s fuel relief scheme.

The desks will be occupied by the administration officials and the petrol station workers who will guide the consumers through the process of registering and other necessary steps, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement. Shehbaz also asked officials to raise awareness among the public regarding the scheme.

The government informed the meeting that the scheme has been extended across the country and has been launched in Islamabad, in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in the pilot mode.

Applicants need to provide four details for registration: Applicant CNIC Number, Vehicle Number Plate, Province of Registration and Vehicle Registration Date.

The scheme offers relief of Rs 100 per litre of petrol. Motorcycle owners, rickshaw owners, Qingqi rickshaw owners and other two and three wheelers can take the subsidy at a rate of 20 litres per month while car owners can take the subsidy at a rate of 30 litres per month, provided the engine capacity is under 800 cc.

Economic Coordination Committee has granted approval for Rs75 billion for the programme. Through the payment mechanism, an eligible two or three-wheeler user can earn up to Rs 500 per week for 5 litres of petrol and an eligible car owner can earn up to Rs 3000 per month. Subsidy applies to non-commercial users, and one vehicle per consumer/owner.

The government is carrying out this relief by a digital Fuel Pass system. The registered users can register via the prescribed proforma and send “TOK” to 9771 to get the fuel token for availed subsidised petrol.

This is being rolled out in stages. The programme was launched in Islamabad at midnight on September 15 and the remaining provinces Azad Kashmir Gilgit-Baltistan were to get the facility at midnight on September 17.

The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA), however, has rejected to sell petrol at the announced Rs100 per litre discount under the scheme. Malik Khuda Bakhsh, the chairman of the PPDA, said petrol stations could be closed throughout the country if it was applied to petrol dealers.

He suggested the approach of oil marketing companies to import petroleum products directly which will help resolve issues on relief amount and fuel selling.
