Nvidia Plans Major AI Data Centre Expansion in Australia

As demand for AI infrastructure grows, Nvidia aims to more than double the data centre computing capability in Australia by 2027.

The US chipmaker announced on Thursday that it is collaborating with Australian cloud and data centre firms to establish as much as 2 GW of AI-themed compute. It has partners such as Firmus, CDC, NEXTDC and AirTrunk.

Data Centres Australia, an industry body, has released research showing that in Australia, there is currently approximately 1.6 GW of data centre computing capacity. Nvidia’s proposed expansion would then be a significant boost in the AI computing power available in the country.

The new facilities will be powered by Nvidia’s DSX platform, which is built to “deliver the computing, networking, and software infrastructure required for large-scale AI workloads.

The extra capacity will enable Australian startups, researchers, universities, developers and businesses to create AI models, applications and AI agents, Nvidia said. The expansion also could facilitate new power generation initiatives required to keep up with the increase in demand for computing, the company said.

The move follows Australia’s push to boost investments in data centres to position the country more strongly in the global AI sector. Meanwhile, there have been concerns about their excessive power and water consumption and calls for greater regulation of these facilities as they rapidly expand.

Nvidia states the growth is driven by the growing demand for high-performance computing (HPC) as AI technology becomes ubiquitous across various sectors.
