Nepali Woman Rescued Alive 10 Days After Flood Buried Her Home

A 64-year-old woman was rescued alive in the NUWAKOT area of Nepal, 10 days after a huge flood buried her house with mud and debris.

Members of Armed Police Force clearing the disaster hit area discovered Chandrika Shrestha on Saturday in Betrawati of Nuwakot district of Nepal.

Rescuers pulled the woman out of the buried house, covered in mud. Later, she was airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment, police said.

Shrestha was found by a team of police officers when they were clearing the area, police deputy superintendent Iqbal Hawari told AFP.

A video released by Nepal’s Armed Police Force only revealed the upper part of the house, with its lower levels covered by layers of sludge.

Since the disastrous wall of water and mud came through in the regions along the border between China and Nepal on Aug. 26 after a glacial and rock collapse, the rescue efforts have been underway to look for survivors.

The recovery of Shrestha follows the rescue of another Chinese man found alive in a tunnel in the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa district in Nepal.

On the other hand, there have been many casualties due to the disaster on both sides of the border.

The national disaster agency of Nepal said 1,344 bodies have been recovered in the country with about 5,000 people still missing.

State media in neighbouring China said 31 people were killed and 531 missing.

The total death toll from the two countries was 1,375 and over 5,500 were still missing.
