New Zealand batter Mark Chapman has signed a casual contract for the 2026-27 season with New Zealand Cricket, which will enable him to compete in Australia’s Big Bash League and still be available for international duty.
He has played 129 games for New Zealand in white-ball cricket. He will now play in the upcoming white-ball action against India, before heading to Australia for the BBL. His Big Bash team has yet to be announced.Chapman is one of a number of New Zealanders to opt for casual contract. Fellows Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert have done similar deals to increase their playing opportunities in overseas Twenty20 cricket without being ruled out of the national squad.
Chapman said that he had given it his all and that New Zealand Cricket had backed him up in his decision.
His departure from the central contract list has also allowed for fast bowler Matt Fisher to be given his first full New Zealand contract.
Casual contracts are a way for New Zealand players to play in high-paying franchise competitions and still be able to return to the national team.
With the decision, Chapman will be able to pursue an opportunity in the BBL without compromising his availability for New Zealand’s white-ball sides.
