Google has revealed that it will spend at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) within the next two years on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Finland.
This investment will be made in 2027 and 2028 and it will involve data centres, electricity grid upgrades, clean energy projects and battery systems. The infrastructure will be used for services such as Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube, Google said.
The transaction is the biggest one that the company has made in Europe, it said.
Finland’s cold climate and abundant supply of low carbon electricity makes it an appealing place for data centres to operate, as it can reduce cooling and energy expenses.
Google says the spending should add some $3.6 billion to Finland’s GDP during the construction and create approximately 7,000 jobs per year once the plants are running.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo expressed his welcome for the investment, which he said reflected the strengths of the country and could be used to enrich the general innovation, research and development.
