Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Canada on Thursday to discuss measures to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses and get ready for the winter.
Zelenskyy also announced that his trip would involve crucial meetings and deals with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with the goal of boosting cooperation between the two nations. Defence, economic and energy cooperation are highlighted as key areas of the visit by Canada.
“First and foremost, it will be about support for Ukraine to ensure our skies and readiness for winter,” Zelenskyy said. The talks will focus on Ukraine’s resistance, assistance to the Ukrainian people and its capabilities to defend itself, he added.
In advance of winter, when Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure may once again strain the power grid, Ukraine has requested more air defence assistance. Zelenskyy recently emphasized the necessity of interceptor missiles, especially for the Patriot air defence system, and aid in protecting energy infrastructure.
Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska will participate in activities in various cities across Canada during their Sept. 9-11 trip, Canada said. Zelenska is also meeting Canadian philanthropists in support of Ukraine.
The Canadian government is a key international backer of Ukraine. Earlier this year, Ottawa has committed to provide military aid until 2026, including support for ammunition and Canadian-built armoured vehicles and other essential equipment.
Zelenskyy met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Norway before departing for Canada; they spoke about preparing for the winter, energy security and air defence. Later he met with the foreign minister of Iceland at Keflavík airport about the same priorities.
