In a dramatic rescue, a 64-year-old Nepali woman was found alive within the mud and debris of her home, buried by devastating floods 11 days ago and her family in disbelief.
Chandrika Shrestha came from Betrawati in Nuwakot district of Nepal where she was missing since the disaster on August 26. Her family thought she was dead and had even started the funeral preparations when rescuers found her alive under the debris.
The report says that Shrestha was discovered by the members of Nepal’s Armed Police Force when they were engaged in clearing the disaster-hit area.
She was pulled from the mud and taken to Kathmandu for medical treatment. The video from the security force showed rescuers treading around the rubble of the house; most of the house was covered with layers of mud.
The rescue was followed by a few days of confusion for Shrestha’s family which had thought they had lost their daughter in the floods.
Huge surge of water and debris in communities near northern border of the country caused widespread destruction in parts of Nepal on 26 August.
The catastrophe also had an impact on neighbouring Tibet, with more fatalities and lots of people reported missing due to flooding and landslides.
Rescue teams are still searching for missing persons in the affected areas and Shrestha’s survival after being trapped under debris for 11 days has been one of the most remarkable story of the disaster.
